Press Release: Bandung welcomes the New Year with India Culture Week celebrations
Embassy of India Jakarta along Regional Government of Bandung jointly hosted the India Culture Week celebrations in Bandung from 30 December onwards. The grand finale of the India Culture Week was held at the central public square in Bandung on 31st December evening, with a Gala Indian Music and Dance performance that was attended by more than 3000 local citizens and art lovers of Bandung.
Embassy of India in Jakarta using local resources and artists from its Jakarta based Cultural Center (JNICC) put together a gala musical dance performance on Indian songs, which was jointly inaugurated by the Mayor of Bandung, H.E. Mr. Ridwan Kamil and Ambassador of India to Indonesia H.E. Mr Pradeep Kumar Rawat.
India was the first country chosen by the Bandung Government as its partner for the India Culture Week celebrations that were held in this format for the first time ever in Bandung.
The week long festivities included a high profile Visit India Tourism Seminar, an Indian Food Festival, Indian Film Festival and a photo exhibitcelebrating key moments in India Indonesia diplomatic history. Brief details of the events are as below:
Visit India Tourism Seminar (Hotel Savoy Bandung, 30 December)
Ambassador of India to Indonesia H.E. Mr. Pradeep Kumar Rawat and the Mayor of Bandung H.E. Mr. Ridwan Kamil jointly inaugurated the Visit India Tourism Seminar at Hotel Savoy on 30 December 2017. The Mayor of Bandung expressed hope that the event would lead to increased flow of tourists from each other's region. Ambassador highlighted the scope of enhancing cooperation in tourism sector between India and Bandung which had great potential.
The Seminar was attended by representatives of leading tour and travel companies and airlines from Indonesia and India. M/s Top Travels and Tours and M/s Cox & Kings made presentations on tourism opportunities including tours to Islamic monuments in India, Golden Triangle, luxury train Deccan Express, while Apollo Hospital made a presentation on medical tourism and on possibilities for collaboration in hospital management systems. Air India and Jet Airways representatives also shared their connectivity options for travel to India. Visit India Tourism Seminar was attended by more than 100 participants including travel agents and local media representatives.
Indian Food Festival (Hotel Savoy Bandung, 30 December – 5 January)
Ambassador of India to Indonesia H.E. Mr Pradeep Kumar Rawat and the Mayor of Bandung H.E. Mr Ridwan Kamil jointly inaugurated the Indian Food Festival at the Garden Restaurant of Hotel Savoy, Bandung on 30 December 2017. Mayor of Bandung emphasized that culinary diplomacy was one of the best means to enhance interaction among the regions. Ambassador expressed appreciation to the Government of Bandung for their support and welcomed the participants to enjoy the Indian culinary delicacies. Ambassador hoped that the Bandung people would enjoy the Indian delicacies during the Indian Food Festival in large numbers. An Indian chef along with the chefs from Savoy prepared the Indian delicacies. The Indian Food Festival was attended by more than 100 food lovers, who also witnessed live Indian musical performances. The Indian Food Festival would remain open to general public till 5 January 2018 daily from 1200 - 1400 hrs at Hotel Savoy
Indian Film Festival (Majestic Theater Bandung, 30 Dec – 5 Jan)
The week long Indian Film Festival showcasing Indian Bollywood blockbusters was jointly inaugurated by H.E. Pradeep Kumar Rawat, Ambassador of India, and Ms. Atalia Kamil, spouse of Bandung Mayor Ridwan Kamil. Speaking at the inaugural Ms. Kamil said “that she loves Bollywood movies as it had a song for every occasion.” Ambassador highlighted the universal appeal of Bollywood movies as it cut across language barriers with their touching themes. The festival began with screening of ‘English Vinglish’. About 150 fans of Indian movies from Bandung and neighboring area watched the inaugural show of the festival. The festival will continue till 5 January 2018 and some of India’s latest Bollywood hits like Tanu Weds Manu; Love Aaj Kal; Peepli Live; Barfi; Hum Aapke Hain Kaun; and Rock On will be screened in the festival. The movies have been dubbed in Bahasa Indonesia and were screened in partnership Zee TV. The venue of the Indian Film Festival at the De Majestic Theatre was truly iconic, which was established in 1925 and is the oldest theatre in Bandung.
India Indonesia Friendship – Photo Exhibit (Bandung Creative Hub, 30 Dec – 5 Jan)
A Photo Exhibition on India-Indonesia Friendship was hosted at the Bandung Creative Hub from 30 December 2017 to 5 January 2018. This is one of the first photo exhibitions to be held in the Bandung Creative Hub which was recently inaugurated by President of Indonesia in Bandung on 28 December.
The exhibition was inaugurated by H.E. Mr. Pradeep Kumar Rawat, Ambassador of India and Ms. Dewi Kaniasari, Head of Culture and Tourism Department, Bandung City Government on 30 December afternoon. The exhibition, which showcases 31 historical photos, bring on display the warm relations between leaders of India and Indonesia, establishment of diplomatic relations, visit of President Soekarno to India in 1950 when he was Guest of Honour in India’s first Republic Day
and photos of leaders of India and Indonesia interacting with each other during the course of past six and a half decades, uptil the State visit of President Joko Widodo to India in December 2016. The photo exhibition provides the youth of Bandung city, a quick insight into the history of India-Indonesia relations as well as the famous Bandung Conference.
It may be noted that the Bandung City Government as a special gesture decked up the entire down town city area of Bandung with flags of India and Indonesia and India Culture Week flyers.
The week long celebrations were extensively covered by local media and attracted footfall of more than several thousand Bandung citizens’ overs the weekend. It is expected that with this series of events showcased under India Culture Week, a better appreciation of Indian art, culture and tourism would be fostered amongst the local people of Bandung.
